Split for Crusaders to Conclude Elmhurst Invitational

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Susquehanna volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the Elmhurst Invitational, losing its first match to Millikin before beating Wheaton (Ill.) in four sets in the final match of the weekend.

The Crusaders (13-5) suffered a straight-sets defeat to Millikin, falling by a score of 10-25, 16-24, 14-25. The Big Blue controlled much of the match and finished with a .417 hitting percentage to Susquehanna's .098.

Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch tallied a team-high seven kills as Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) and Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) added six and five, respectively. Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) led with 21 assists and seven digs.

In the afternoon, however, SU was able to break its four-match losing streak with a 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14 victory over Wheaton (Ill.).

In the first set, Wheaton jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back, but SU answered with a run of its own in the second, getting ahead 7-0 before conceding a point.

The third was closely contested until the Thunder opened up a 15-9 lead with a six-point run, though the Crusaders remained determined and claimed the last eight points to lead 2-1. Set number four belonged to SU, which trailed only once, at 1-0 in the set.

Byrne, Sherkness, and Whiteman each recorded 11 kills in the match, with Byrne adding two service aces and nine digs as well. O'Hearn reached a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) had a team-high 21 digs. Meanwhile, Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) had a team-high three aces to pace the Crusaders.

SU returns home for its conference opener against Juniata on Tuesday, Sept. 23 against Juniata in a rematch of the 2013 Landmark Conference Championship.
