Crusaders Pick Up Pair of Conference Wins

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team claimed two Landmark conference victories on Saturday at a match day hosted by Juniata College, beating Moravian 3-1 and sweeping Elizabethtown in three sets. The Crusaders are now 2-1 in conference and improve to 15-6 overall.

The first match against the Greyhounds of Moravian went 25-14, 25-16, 17-25, 25-16 in favor of SU, which trailed only twice during the first two sets. The third set was a back-and-forth contest that remained close throughout until 17-15 in favor of Moravian, which won the next six points and eventually the set.

In the fourth and decisive set, the Crusaders rushed out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back.

Setter Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) finished with a double-double in the form of 29 assists and 10 digs, while Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) was close with eight kills and 13 digs.  Also finishing with double-digit digs were Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa /Tamaqua Area) with 13 and 20, respectively.

Other standouts included Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area), who recorded seven kills and a strong .545 hitting percentage and Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity), who led the team with nine kills.

In the second match of the afternoon, SU dispatched the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown by a score of 25-19, 25-19, 25-11. The first two sets were tightly contested, but ultimately went in favor of the Crusaders, who posted a better hitting percentage in each set.

Susquehanna ran away with the third with accurate hitting, recording 16 kills and only two errors in 26 attempts for a team hitting percentage of .538.

Byrne paced the team with 12 digs and 13 kills, with Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) and Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) adding eight and seven kills, respectively.  Dunkel also added one block and a block assist, finishing the day with six total blocks. O'Hearn again led SU in assists with 27 while Paluck notched 15 more digs.

SU will play two more conference matches against Goucher and Catholic on Saturday, Oct. 4 with scheduled start times of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
