O’Hearn Passes 2,000 Assists As Volleyball Sweeps

SCHENECTADY, NY–The Susquehanna volleyball team had a perfect start to the weekend at the Union Invitational, beating both Union and Lasell 3-0 on Friday evening.

Setter Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) recorded 44 assists and passed 2,000 for her career, becoming just the fourth player in program history to do so.

The Crusaders won their first match of the evening in impressive fashion, sweeping host Union (N.Y.) by a score of 25-15, 25-15, 25-22.

In the first set, SU fell behind 5-1 before rattling off seven straight points with the help of three service aces from Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) to take an 8-5 lead. After trading points, the Crusaders took six of the next seven to pull ahead at 16-8 and Union was never able to cut the deficit to less than eight.

The second set was closely contested until 9-7 in favor of Susquehanna, which won seven of the next nine points and effectively put it out of reach.

Union jumped ahead early in set number three, taking a 5-0 lead, but SU clawed its way back in with accurate hitting, including three kills from Kady Faller (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township), and evened the Dutchwomen at 6-6. The back-and-forth action continued until 18-18 when the visitors won three consecutive points and never trailed for the remainder of the third.

Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) added five block assists, while Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) chipped in three and eight kills as well. 

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) hit double figures in digs with 17, while Corinne Eidle (Reading, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) were close with nine apiece.

SU was completely dominant in the second match, dispatching Lasell in straight sets 25-12, 25-8, 25-8. The team achieved a .551 attack percentage with 42 kills and only four errors in the match.

15 different players saw action for the Crusaders in a match that lasted fewer than 45 minutes.

Faller had a team-high seven kills and Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) added six. Julie Kreutzer (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) handed out 18 assists and Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) notched six of the team's 16 service aces.

Susquehanna continues play tomorrow at the Union Invitational with matches against Bridgewater St. and Skidmore at 12 and 2 p.m., respectively.
