Volleyball Downs Altoona in Four

ALTOONA, PA. – After a minor setback in the first set, the Susquehanna volleyball team rallied to beat homestanding PSU-Altoona, 3-1, on Tuesday evening. The Crusaders won by a score of 23-25, 25-9, 25-13, 25-23 for their 11th consecutive victory.

Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Maggie O'Hearn  (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) had her own with 42 assists and 15 digs. Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) was close with 10 kills and eight digs.

SU fell behind 5-14 in the first set, but recovered well and was able to narrow the gap to 11-14. After back-and-forth action, both teams were tied at 23 apiece, but the Nittany Lions took the set with consecutive points.

The second set belonged entirely to the Crusaders, though, as they raced out to an 11-2 lead behind solid hitting and never looked back. The team recorded 12 kills and only one error in 28 attempts for a .393 attack percentage.

SU's percentage was even better in the third, standing at .405 from 18 kills and three errors. Susquehanna jumped ahead to a 12-4 lead, though Altoona won the next four points to narrow the gap. From there, the visiting Crusaders put distance between themselves and the Lions, effectively closing the game at 17-12 with five consecutive points.

The fourth set was closely contested and featured seven ties, but no lead changes as Susquehanna never trailed. Byrne recorded six kills in the set and Whiteman added four.

Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) recorded four block assists to go with seven kills and seven digs, while Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) notched a team-high 21 digs. Corinne Eidle (Reading, Pa. / Wyomissing Area) also reached double figures in digs with 10. Senior Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) chipped in seven kills as well.

The Crusaders have a quick turnaround as they play Wednesday, Oct. 22 at home against Penn College. The contest, which has been designated as Senior Night, will begin at 7 p.m.
