3-0 Sweep Gives Volleyball 13th Straight Win

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – 13 wasn't an unlucky number for the Susquehanna women's volleyball team on Friday night as the Crusaders picked up their 13th consecutive win with a 3-0 defeat of host DeSales University. During the streak, SU has only dropped three games and has not been pushed to five sets in any match.

The Crusaders dispatched the Bulldogs by a score of 26-24, 25-17, 25-19 in a match that lasted just over an hour.

The first set featured nine ties, including one late in the game at 22-22. The Bulldogs would go on to win the next two points and had the opportunity to close out the set, but an SU timeout allowed the Crusaders to regroup.

After the break, Susquehanna won the next four points and the game behind kills from Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic), Jessica Holm (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills), and Hayley Dunkel (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area).

The second set was similarly tight until 16-15 in favor of the visitors when SU won eight consecutive points to effectively put it out of reach.

The Crusaders saved their best hitting for the last frame, registering an impressive .452 team attack percentage from 17 kills and only three errors on 31 attempts

Sophomore Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) had a complete statline with 37 assists, 12 digs, six kills, and three block assists while Dunkel added four block assists and eight kills of her own. Sherkness tallied a match-high 11 kills with only three errors on the night.

Susquehanna had two other players record double-digit digs with Corinne Eidle (Reading, Pa./Wyomissing Area) registering 16 and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) notching 15.

Tomorrow, SU will continue competition at DeSales University when it plays SUNY Canton and Marywood at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
