Late Comeback Falls Short at #12 Eastern

PHILADELPHIA – Faced with a two-set deficit, the Susquehanna volleyball team fought back and nearly pushed the 12th-ranked Eastern University Eagles to five sets on Friday night, but ultimately fell 3-1 by a score of 13-25, 21-25, 25-22, 27-29.

SU, which is currently ranked eighth by the NCAA in the Mid-Atlantic Region, saw its 15-match win streak come to an end with the loss.

After dropping the first set, the Crusaders rushed out to an early 6-2 lead in the second before Eastern answered with a run of its own. From there onward, the set featured nine ties and neither team was able to find breathing room until the Eagles closed out the game with two consecutive points.

Susquehanna posted its best hitting percentage of the night in the third set, reaching a .281 mark from 14 kills and five errors on 32 attempts. Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) tallied six of her 12 kills in the set while Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) notched four of her team-high 15.

The fourth set was marked by strong runs from both squads: Eastern won nine consecutive points to pull ahead 16-11, but SU answered shortly after with a six-point run to take a 19-18 lead.

Neither side was able to capitalize on its first game point opportunity, but Eastern was not denied a second time and closed out the set and match at 29-27.

Julie Kreutzer (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) handed out 34 assists in her second start of the season while Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) added seven to go with eight kills and eight digs.

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) and Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) hit double figures in digs, with 21 and 15, respectively.

The Crusaders conclude their regular season with matches against Arcadia and Messiah at tomorrow's Old Friends Crossover Tournament. The first match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
