SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team opened its 2015 campaign with 3-0 victories over visiting Lycoming College and Alvernia University.
SU (2-0) defeated the Warriors 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19 before going on to win 25-8, 25-17 and 25-13 over Alvernia.
Against Lycoming (0-1), Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) led the Crusaders with a match-high 20 kills to go along with 10 digs and two block assists. Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) added seven kills and eight digs of her own while Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) finished with 30 assists and nine digs.
The solid play continued in the nightcap against Alvernia (0-1) with 13 players seeing action for SU. Whiteman added another 12 kills and six digs while Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) contributed six kills, two digs and one block assist. O'Hearn chipped in another 29 assists and Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) led the team with 10 digs.
The Crusaders led from start to finish in the first set and easily overcame a 3-0 deficit to start the second set.
Susquehanna jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set before Alvernia tied it at eight. A Whiteman kill made it 9-8 in favor of SU and put her team ahead for good.
SU returns to action on Sept. 4-5 at the Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport.
