Volleyball Splits on Day One of CNU’s Captain’s Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Susquehanna University volleyball team traveled to Christopher Newport University to compete in the two day Captain's Classic. On Friday, SU took on Bridgewater College and nationally ranked No. 6 Christopher Newport.

In the first match, the Crusaders' offense dominated and SU beat the Eagles of Bridgewater (0-2) in straight sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-17). Susquehanna tallied 40 kills and only 10 hitting errors to end the match with a .288 hitting percentage.

Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) led with 13 kills and only one error, while Tara Mahoney (Edgewater, Md./South River) contributed eight kills. Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) and Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) tallied six and five kills respectively, with O'Hearn also supplying 30 assists.

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) led the team with 16 digs, while Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) contributed 10 digs.

The second match for Susquehanna (3-1) proved more trying, with No. 6 Christopher Newport (3-0) winning in three sets (25-14, 25-12, 25-17).

Whiteman led the offense with seven kills, followed by Rachel Wherry (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and Mahoney with five each. O'Hearn tallied 19 assists and Paluck contributed 12 digs.

The Crusaders return to action tomorrow, September 5, for day two of the Captain's Classic.
