Volleyball Takes Down F&M in Five

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team handed Franklin & Marshall its first loss of the season with a 3-2 road win against the Diplomats on Tuesday night.

The Crusaders (4-3) dropped the first set but rallied to win three of the final four sets from F&M (4-1) for their fourth victory of the fall.

Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa./Marian Catholic) and Morgan Whiteman (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) combined for 41 kills with 24 for Sherkness, who also added four digs. Whiteman – who had 17 kills – tied for the team lead with her 16 digs while Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) added 16 digs of her own to go along with a match-high 55 assists.

Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua Area) picked up 31 digs and Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) finished with five kills, three digs and three block assists. Freshman Tara Mahoney (Edgewater, Md./South River) also had nine kills to go along with five combined blocks (two assisted, three solo).

The Crusaders dropped the first set despite cutting what had been a six-point Diplomats lead to just one (23-22) after reeling off seven unanswered points. Franklin & Marshall closed out the first set, though, with a kill by Rachel Umberger for the 25-23 win.

SU rebounded to win the next two sets. Susquehanna led by five (15-10) roughly midway through the second set before Franklin & Marshall tied it at 26. Whiteman's kill put SU ahead 27-26 and Carvin's service ace ended the set in favor of the Crusaders.

Susquehanna led from start to finish in a 25-19 third-set win and led 10-3 in the early action of the fourth set. The Crusaders still maintained a five-point lead (22-17) late in the action but the Diplomats ended the set on an 8-1 run to rally for a 25-23 win over SU, forcing a fifth set.

The Crusaders again led for the duration of the fifth set and closed out the match on a Sherkness kill.

SU returns to action on Sept. 11-12 at the Emory Classic.
