ATLANTA, Ga. – The Susquehanna volleyball team won one and lost one on day two of Emory University's Emory Classic.
The first match of the day saw SU taking on the Scots of Covenant College. The Crusaders won in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 16-14).
In the first set both teams traded points back and forth, and tallied six ties, until the Scots put it away winning 25-23. The Crusaders took the lead from the beginning of the second set and never let it go, winning 25-20. Covenant won the third set 25-18 while Susquehanna took the fourth 25-19 ensuring a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) put SU on the board first but then the Scots went on a five point run to go up 5-1. The Crusaders tied the game at 12-12 after an 11-7 run. A kill by Byrne tied the game at 13 and errors would tie the set at 14. Two costly hitting errors by the Scots ended the set, and the match, in Susquehanna's favor.
Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa. / Hempfield) led the team in assists with 51 while Byrne led in kills with 20. Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa. / Marian Catholic) and Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa. / Northampton Area) tallied 15 and 11 kills respectively. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua Area) led in digs with 35 while Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn) and Byrne contributed 18 each.
The last match of the Classic pitted the Crusaders against the No. 1 Emory University Eagles. Emory defeated Susquehanna in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-16).
Byrne led in kills with seven and Carvin contributed six. O'Hearn tallied 21 assists. Sarah Paluck led in digs with 16, bringing her career total to 2,110 thus breaking the school career record of 2,103.
The Crusaders return to action September 18-19 when they host the Hampton Inn Crusader Classic.
