SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball team was perfect again on day two of The Hampton Inn Crusader Classic defeating PSU-Behrend and Washington College.
SU started the day going 3-1 against the Lions of PSU-Behrend.
In the second match of the day the Crusaders took on the Shorewomen of Washington College winning in four sets (25-19, 26-24, 17-25, 25-20).
In the first set, both teams traded points back-and-forth until 15-15 when a kill by Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa. / Marian Catholic) put the Crusaders ahead by one. SU went on a 9-5 run to end the set in the Crusaders' favor.
Set two was a battle from the beginning with Susquehanna taking a 22-21 lead. At 24-21 a serving error and two attack errors on SU allowed Washington to tie at 24-24. A kill by Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa. / Hempfield) and a Washington attacking error ended the set at 26-24 in favor SU.
In set three, two five-point runs for the Shorewomen helped Washington win the set 25-17. The Crusaders jumped out in front of Washington in the fourth set and never let up winning 25-20.
SU was led by O'Hearn who tallied 49 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. The attack was led by Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and Sherkness who totaled 18 and 17 kills respectively. Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa. / Northampton Area) contributed 11 kills while Tara Mahoney (Edgewater, Md. / South River) had nine. Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua Area) led the team on digs with 23.
With these two wins the Crusaders went undefeated on the weekend become the Hampton Inn Crusader Classic Tournament Champions.
SU returns to action on Tuesday, September 22 at Juniata for the first Landmark Conference match of the season.
