Crusader Volleyball Wins Two on the Road

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball team won two Landmark Conference matches with victories against Elizabethtown and Moravian College at Elizabethtown College.

In the first match of the day the Crusaders (12-6, 2-1) took on the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College (10-6, 0-2) and won 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22).

The Crusaders dropped the first set after the Blue Jays went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 19-19. A block by Tara Mahoney (Edgewater, Md. / South River) and Elizabethtown tied it again at 21-21. A kill by Maggie O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa. / Hempfield) put the Crusaders up by one again but it would not be enough and the Blue Jays took the set 25-23.

In the second set the Blue Jays scored first to go ahead 2-0 before a kill and service ace from Marykate Sherkness (Treskow, Pa. / Marian Catholic) and a double block from Mahoney and Mallory Yeingst (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Twp.) gave the Crusaders the lead 3-2 they would not relinquish, winning 25-17.

The third set saw Susquehanna leading from start to finish winning 25-23. While in the fourth set SU jumped ahead 4-1 when Elizabethtown's six point scoring run put the team ahead 8-4. Down 10-6, the Crusaders went on a run of their own to take the lead at 12-10. SU remained in the lead until a tie at 22-22 before a kill by Leana Carvin (Walnutport, Pa. / Northampton Area), a service ace by Alyssa Chiodo (Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn) and a kill by Sherkness put the set and match away in Susquehanna's favor.

Erin Byrne (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) led the Crusaders with on the offensive front with 20 kills. Sherkness and Carvin tallied 15 and 10 kills respectively. O'Hearn totaled 49 assists while Sarah Paluck (Nesquehoning, Pa. / Tamaqua Area) led in digs with 19.

The second match for Susquehanna saw them taking on the Greyhounds of Moravian College and winning in straight sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-18).

In all three sets the Crusaders took the lead early and did not look back winning each decisively.

As a team, SU had tallied a hitting percentage of .430 and were led by Byrne with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .500. Sherkness totaled eight kills and two block assists while Carvin had seven kills and two block assists as well. O'Hearn had 22 assists while Paluck and Chiodo contributed 12 and 11 digs respectively.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 for another Landmark Conference weekend in which they take on The Catholic University of America and Goucher College.
