GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball lost a close one to Gettysburg in five sets (13-25, 18-25, 25-12, 25-19, 13-15) Wednesday night.
In the first set SU (14-7) jumped to a 4-1 lead until Gettysburg (10-9) went on a five point run to take the lead by two. A kill by Leana Carvin tied the set at 6-6 but the Bullets went on a 4-2 run to take the lead again, and they did not relinquish it to take the set 25-13.
In the second set both teams traded points back and forth until 11-11 when an SU service error gave Gettysburg the one point advantage. The Bullets took the second set 25-18.
The third set started in favor of Gettysburg once again but a 4-2 run by the Crusaders tied the set at 6-6. A service ace by Erin Byrne put SU ahead and they never looked back tallying 14 kills and two service aces to win 25-12.
Susquehanna took an 8-2 lead in the fourth set before Gettysburg started fighting back but it would not be enough. The Bullets came within two points at 12-10 but two kills from Marykate Sherkness immediately followed by a kill from Maggie O'Hearn put the Crusaders ahead 15-10 and they would go on to win by a five point margin, 25-20.
The deciding fifth set was a battle from the beginning with a total of five ties throughout the 15 point set. Byrne tied it for the last time with a kill to put the set at 12-12. A Gettysburg kill and a SU attacking error put the Bullets up 14-12. Byrne brought it within one with a kill but Gettysburg put it away 15-13 with a kill of their own ending the set 15-13.
Erin Byrne earned a double double while leading the team in kills with 19 and tallying 12 digs. Sherkness totaled 10 kills and was followed closely by Tara Mahoney who had nine. O'Hearn had 36 assists and 20 digs while Sarah Paluck led the team in digs with 24.
The Crusaders return to action Saturday, Oct. 10 when they participate in the Golden Knight Invitational hosted by Clarkson University.
