HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Susquehanna volleyball team traveled to Juniata College Saturday to compete in the last Landmark Conference round robin of the season and faced off against U.S. Merchant Marine and Scranton.
In the first match of the day SU (18-8, 6-1) defeated USMMA (13-10, 1-5) in straight sets (25-23, 25-11, 25-17).
The first set was tied five times before the Crusaders took the lead for good when Leana Carvin served an ace to go ahead 9-8. Susquehanna proceeded to go on a five point run and did not look back, winning the set 25-23.
After a 4-4 tie in the second set, SU took the lead with a kill from Morgan Whiteman and went on two four-point runs as well as a five-point run to ultimately win the set 25-11. A 6-2 run at the beginning of the third set was all that it took for the Crusaders to jump ahead of the Mariners and keep the lead, winning 25-17.
Susquehanna was led offensively by Whiteman and Marykate Sherkness who totaled 12 kills and only four errors each while Erin Byrne followed with nine kills and led in digs with 18. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 23 assists.
The second match of the day for the Crusaders saw them taking on the Royals of Scranton University (21-8, 6-1) and winning in three sets again (25-17, 25-20, 25-13).
After a 3-3 tie in the first set, a 15-5 run allowed SU to take the lead. Scranton went on a four-point run to make it 19-10 but it was not enough and the Crusaders won the set 25-17.
SU took an early lead in the second set but Scranton was able to knot the game at 12-12 and 14-14 before taking its only lead of the set at 15-14. A kill by Byrne tied the game again at 15-15 and an attacking error by the Royals followed by a Crusader service error tied the set for the last time at 16-16. O'Hearn scored on a kill to give the lead to SU at 17-16 and the team did not give it up the rest of the set, winning 25-20.
Susquehanna came out strong in the third set and never let up, taking the set 25-13.
SU was led defensively by Sarah Paluck and Byrne who totaled 11 digs a piece. Byrne also led in kills, along with Sherkness, with 11 kills. O'Hearn tallied 26 assists on the match.
The Crusaders return to action Oct. 18 at Frostburg State for a 2:00pm match.
