Volleyball Wins Fifth-Straight; Byrne Reaches 1,000 Kills

FROSTBURG, Md. – Susquehanna junior Erin Byrne became the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills and the Crusaders defeated Frostburg State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Byrne reached the milestone in the third set and has exactly 1,000 kills for her career, placing her eighth all-time.

SU (19-8) defeated the Bobcats (13-14) 25-13, 25-22, 28-26. Byrne had 11 kills, one of three SU players with double-digit kills. Marykate Sherkness led the team with 12 kills while Morgan Whiteman had 10. Maggie O'Hearn had a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs and Leana Carvin chipped in five kills, four blocks (three assisted) and two digs.

The Crusaders went down 2-0 early in the first set before tying it at two on a Frostburg State attack error. SU went ahead 4-3 on another attack error and never looked back. The Bobcats never pulled closer than three points and the set was won on a kill by Whiteman.

Set two was again tied 2-2 early in the action but yet another Frostburg State attack error gave Susquehanna a 3-2 lead and SU never again trailed in the set. The Bobcats briefly made it a three-point set (19-16) but they gave the Crusaders the win with yet another attack error.

The third set was the closest of the afternoon. Frostburg State led 12-3, forcing the Crusaders to slowly chip away at the lead. It was 16-15 in favor of the Bobcats before a Karli Grimes attack error tied it at 16. SU went up 17-16 on Sherkness's kill.

Frostburg tied it at 26 all before Julie Kreutzer and Sherkness came up with the final two kills of the match for the 28-26 win.

SU returns home to host Penn State-Altoona on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
