Successful Senior Sendoff for Volleyball

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night in the best possible way – with a 3-1 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona.

Prior to the start of the match, the team honored its three senior members: Sarah Paluck, Rachel Wherry and Morgan Whiteman.

The Crusaders (20-8) won 25-12, 23-25, 25-10, 25-16 over the Lady Lions (12-11) to pick up their sixth-straight win and 20th overall victory of the season.

Erin Byrne tallied a match-high 19 kills while Marykate Sherkness and Whiteman added 18 and 14, respectively. Byrne also had 10 digs for a double-double and SU finished with a team attack percentage of .342 versus the Lions' .135.

Maggie O'Hearn led all players with 47 assists and Paluck was one of four players with double digit digs, finishing with 25. O'Hearn had 10 as did Alyssa Chiodo.

The Crusaders led from start to finish in the opening set. They took a 10-point lead (18-8) on a Lions' block error and finished with a 15-point margin of victory (27-12).

The second set was a back and forth battle. The set was tied on six separate occasions, including a 21-21 score late in the action before Penn State Altoona closed it out on an Amanda Hammer kill.

The third and fourth sets went in SU's favor. It was a 15-5 Crusader lead early in the third-set action and the Lions scored just five points over the remainder of the set for the 25-10 SU win.

In the fourth and deciding set, Susquehanna jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back. The lead grew to 10 (16-6) and Byrne ended the match with a kill for the 25-16 win.

Susquehanna hits the road to compete at the Eastern University Quad Match on Oct. 23-24.
