Crusaders Fall to 14th-Ranked Eastern University

St. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Crusader volleyball team opened play at the Eastern Quad Match with a 3-0 loss to the No. 14 host Eastern University Eagles.

Susquehanna (20-9) fell by just four points in set one (25-21) before dropping 25-15, 25-20 decisions in sets two and three, respectively.

Freshman Tara Mahoney was the lone Crusader with double-digit kills as she finished with 10. Erin Byrne had nine kills to go along with three service aces and five digs. Maggie O'Hearn led the team with 23 assists and Sarah Paluck tallied nine digs.

SU led 6-4 early in the first set and was up 9-7 before the Eagles (22-6) put together a 5-0 run to go ahead 12-9. The teams traded points and it was tied at 18 before a Marykate Sherkness kill put Susquehanna up 19-18. The Eagles, though, scored seven of the final nine points to win 25-21.

Eastern never trailed in the second set, despite an early 6-6 score. It was a two-point set in favor of the Eagles (15-13) and Eastern led 20-15 before scoring the final five points of the set for a 25-15 victory.

Susquehanna failed to hold a lead in the third and final set. Mahoney's kill midway through the set got her team within three (12-9) but they pulled no closer in an eventual 25-20 loss.

The Crusaders continue play at the quad match on Saturday with a noon match against Stockton and a 2 p.m. contest against Swarthmore.
