Volleyball Remains Perfect at Home

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – In the final home match of the regular season, the Susquehanna volleyball team captured a 3-1 win over visiting Cortland State, securing its 23rd win of the season in the process and improving to 10-0 at home. SU (23-9) won 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22.

Erin Byrne fell one dig shy of a double-double with her match-high 16 kills and nine digs. Leana Carvin added 14 kills. Three players finished with double-digit dig totals, led by 21 from Sarah Paluck. Alyssa Chiodo had 18 while Morgan Whiteman added 10 to go along with her nine kills and six service aces. Maggie O'Hearn racked up 50 assists and eight digs.

Neither set was decided by more than nine points. In the opening set, Cortland remained within three (21-18) late in the action but the Crusaders scored four of the final seven points to secure the win.

While the second set started out 9-4 in favor of the Red Dragons, Whiteman's kill tied the set at nine and Carvin's kill made it 10-9 and SU would not relinquish that lead. Cortland pulled within two (18-16) before the Crusaders closed out the set with seven unanswered points.

Cortland took the third set after rallying from a seven-point deficit (15-8) but Susquehanna rebounded by winning the decisive fourth set. The Crusaders led in the early going before the Red Dragons took a 14-12 edge. Whiteman's kill tied it at 14 and a Cortland State attack error handed SU a 15-14 lead. Cortland regained a 22-21 advantage and it was tied at 23 before the Crusaders scored the final two points of the set to end the match.

SU travels to Hunter College on Oct. 31 to face FDU-Florham at 1 p.m. and Hunter at 3 p.m.
