NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Susquehanna volleyball team traveled to Hunter College to compete in a tri-match against FDU-Florham and Hunter College and came away with two wins.
The first match of the day for the Crusaders saw them facing the Devils of FDU-Florham. SU won in four sets (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 25-10).
In the first set, Susquehanna took an early 15-6 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-18. The Crusaders had a 24-9 lead until FDU scored 11 unanswered points to bring the set within four (24-20). An attacking error by the Devils ended the set in SU's favor 25-20.
SU led 22-18 in the third set of the match before the Devils went on an eight-point run to end the set in their favor, 25-22. However, the Crusaders won a decisive fourth set after tying the game at five on a Mallory Yeingst kill. SU took the lead at 6-5 and held the Devils to only five more points winning 25-10.
Susquehanna was led on offense by Morgan Whiteman who tallied 11 kills while Elizabeth Krum and Erin Byrne contributed with eight each. Sarah Paluck led in digs with 14 while Julie Kreutzer totaled a game high 29 assists.
SU faced the Hawks of Hunter College in the second match of the day and won in straight sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-23).
The Crusaders led from start to finish in all three sets with the Hawks coming within two in the third. The third set saw SU leading 20-15 before Hunter went on an 8-3 run to tie the game at 23. However, a kill by Krum and a kill by Byrne ended the set, and the match, in SU's favor.
In the second match, Susquehanna was led in kills by Marykate Sherkness and Byrne with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Paluck led the team once again in digs with 14 while Maggie O'Hearn led in assists with 26.
The Crusaders return home on Wednesday, Nov. 4 when they host Scranton for a Landmark Conference semifinal match starting at 7:00 p.m.
