Volleyball Headed Back to Championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – For the seventh time in nine years, the Susquehanna volleyball team is heading to the Landmark Conference championship match following Wednesday's 3-0 win over Scranton in a semifinal match.

The No. 2 seed Crusaders will now travel to face No. 1 seed Juniata on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. A fan bus will be offered for $10 per student. Registration is available at the Susquehanna information desk in Degenstein Campus Center and a valid student ID must be presented to gain admission to Saturday's match. The bus will load at Garrett Sports Complex at 4:45 p.m. and will depart promptly at 5:00 p.m.

Susquehanna defeated Scranton in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-17). Morgan Whiteman and Erin Byrne had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with Byrne also adding four assists, six digs and three blocks (two solo). Sarah Paluck – who was honored prior to the start of the match for breaking the Landmark record in digs this past weekend – had 16 digs and four assists. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 26 assists to go along with three digs and Alyssa Chiodo added 10 digs.

In the opening set, Scranton tied it at 16 after SU had led for the majority of the set to that point. It was 19-18 in favor of Susquehanna before four unanswered Crusader points put them ahead 23-19. It was 24-21 before O'Hearn closed out the match with a kill for the 25-21 victory.

Sets two and three were both 25-17 decisions. Susquehanna never trailed in the second set after jumping out to an 11-5 advantage. The Royals pulled within five (20-15) but SU scored five of the final seven points of the set to clinch the win.

Scranton took a 4-2 lead in set three and it was tied at five before Whiteman's kill made it 6-5 and put SU in the lead for good. The Royals did make it one-point set (13-12) but pulled no closer.
