Perfect Start for Volleyball at Home Tourney

THE HEADLINE: The Susquehanna women's volleyball team opened day one of the 11th-Annual Hampton Inn River Hawks Classic with two wins in its two matches. SU defeated both Nazareth and Frostburg State 3-0.

AGAINST NAZARETH: SU won in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-15. A total of 14 Susquehanna players took the court over the three sets.

AGAINST FROSTBURG STATE: The River Hawks won another three-set decision against Frostburg State by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-15. In this match, 16 different players saw time on the court.

SOME STATS
: Erin Byrne finished the night with 16 kills and 11 assists while Morgan Lowe added 15 kills and 19 digs. Marykate Sherkness combined for 24 kills and Maggie O'Hearn racked up 47 assists.

IN THE OPENING MATCH: SU took a 2-1 first-set lead against Nazareth and did not look back. A 5-0 start to the second set helped Susquehanna cruise to a 25-18 victory and the River Hawks led from start to finish in the deciding set.

THE NIGHTCAP: The River Hawks fell behind in all three sets against the Bobcats but held on for wins in all three. After trailing 10-6 in the opener, back-to-back attack errors by Frostburg State gave SU an 11-10 lead and the River Hawks never again trailed in the set. In set two, Kasey Bost came through with consecutive service aces to put Susquehanna ahead for the first time, 11-10. Frostburg State pulled no closer than three points the remainder of the set.

In the final set, Susquehanna led for the majority of the action. Another Bobcats error gave SU a 10-point edge (21-11) and the River Hawks gave up only four points of the remainder of the set.

THE OTHER MATCHES: Nazareth defeated SUNY Geneseo 3-2, Geneva defeated Frostburg State 3-0 and Geneva defeated Geneseo 3-0.

UP NEXT: Susquehanna takes on Geneva on Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. match against SUNY Geneseo.
