River Hawks Volleyball Defeats Gettysburg

THE MAIN STORY: The Susquehanna women's volleyball team won its third-straight match with a 3-1 win over visiting Gettysburg on Wednesday night.

TEAM RECORDS: The win improved SU's record to 12-3 overall while the Bullets dropped to 7-4. The River Hawks won 23-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-17.

WHY WAS THIS IMPORTANT? Wednesday marked the final tune-up match before Landmark Conference play begins this weekend.

STATS LEADERS: Maggie O'Hearn had a double-double with 52 assists and 14 digs. Erin Byrne led all players with 20 kills. Hannah Lyons added 10 kills, two assists and five digs while Caroline Beohm finished with 28 digs and Morgan Lowe chipped in 13 kills.

FIRST-SET LOSS: Susquehanna trailed from start to finish in the opening set and although the River Hawks pulled within one (19-18) later in the set, they never gained a lead.

QUICK REBOUND: It did not take long to shake off the first set loss as SU went on to win its next three sets. Set two was back and forth to open the action but SU took a 5-4 lead on a kill from Lyons and never surrendered that lead on route to the seven-point win.

SET THREE: Susquehanna opened set three on a 9-3 run and took its first double-digit lead (23-13) on a Gettysburg attack error. SU gave up just one more point to win 25-14.

FINAL SET: The River Hawks never trailed in the fourth and decisive set. Susquehanna went ahead 6-2 early in the action before the Bullets closed the gap to one (8-7). SU countered with a 5-0 run and never let Gettysburg pull closer than four points.

UP NEXT: Susquehanna travels to Scranton for the first Landmark Conference weekend of the season. SU faces Scranton at 11 a.m. on Sept. 24 followed by a 1:30 p.m. match against #12 Juniata.
