QUICK HIT: The Susquehanna volleyball team defeated Alvernia University in straight sets on Thursday evening.
SET ONE: Both teams traded points back and forh in the first set util a kill by Leana Carvin broke a nine-all tie. At this point, the River Hawks went on a 14-6 run to reach set point (24-15). Alvernia scored three points in-a-row to come within six (24-18) but an attacking error gave SU the 25-18 win.
SETS TWO AND THREE: In set two, Alvernia took a 11-7 lead before Susquehanna went on a 10-6 run to tie the set at 17. An Alvernia attacking error gave the River Hawks their first lead since the beginning of the set at 18-17, a lead they would not reliquish. A seven-point run put the game out of reach for Alvernia as SU won 25-21.
The third set saw Susquehanna with a 10-point lead (16-6) before Alvernia cut the lead to six (18-12). However, Alvernia managed to only score one more point during the set as the River Hawks won 25-13.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: Erin Byrne led the River Hawks with 9 kills while Marykate Sherkness and Morgan Lowe tallied eight and seven, respectively. Tara Mahoney contributed six kills while Maggie O'Hearn totaled a game high 29 assists and Alyssa Chiodo had 11 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT? The River Hawks return home to host the second Landmark Conference round robin of the season on Saturday, October 1. Susquehanna will play the first match against Elizabethtown at 11:00 a.m.
