QUICK HIT: The Susquehanna volleyball team won its last two matches of the regular season over regionally ranked Randolph-Macon College and Clarkson at the Emory Tournament.
RECORD: Susquehanna finishes the regular season with a 30-6 overall record
DID YOU KNOW? This is the second season in three years that the River Hawks have totaled 30 wins or more.
AGAINST RANDOLPH-MACON Against the No. 2 team in the South Region, the River Hawks won in four (26-24, 26-24, 27-25 and 25-17).
In the first set, SU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Maggie O'Hearn service ace and kept the lead until the Yellow Jackets tied the game on an O'Hearn attacking error to make it 14-all. Both teams traded points – and the lead –until a Morgan Lowe kill tied the game at 24 and a block-assist (Leana Carvin and Lowe) followed by another kill by Lowe gave SU the 26-24 win.
The second set followed in the same fashion with SU winning 26-24 on a Marykate Sherkness kill followed by a Randolph-Macon attacking error.
After tying the third set at nine on an Erin Byrne kill, the teams battled for the lead until back-to-back kills for the Yellow Jackets game Randolph-Macon the 27-25 victory.
The River Hawks led from start to finish in the fourth, and final, set, winning 25-17 on a R-MC attacking error.
Sherkness led the team with 20 kills while Lowe added 17 and Byrne 11. Lowe and O'Hearn both had double-doubles with Lowe adding 20 digs and O'Hearn tallying 51 assists and 14 digs. Caroline Beohm led the team in digs with 25.
AGAINST CLARKSON: The River Hawks defeated the No. 7 team in the New York Region in straight sets, winning 25-11, 25-19 and 25-20.
In the first set, SU jumped out to an 8-1 lead before Clarkson came within four (8-4). From this point the River Hawks only allowed seven more points on their way to a 25-11 win.
After the second set was tied at two, SU took the lead and never looked back, winning 25-19 on a Mallory Yeingst kill.
Susquehanna was down 2-0 before a Byrne kill and a Clarkson attacking error tied the game at two. The set was tied once more before a block-assist from Carvin and Byrne gave SU the 5-4 lead, a lead that was not relinquished for the remainder of the set as SU won 25-20 to win the match.
Sherkness led in kills once again with 12 while Lowe added 11 and Byrne totaled 10. O'Hearn finished with another double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs while Beohm and Kasey Bost tallied 12 digs each.
WHAT'S NEXT? The No. 2 seeded River Hawks return home on Wednesday, November 2 to host the No. 3 Cardinals of Catholic in a Landmark Conference Semifinal at 7:00 p.m.
