Volleyball Splits Matches on First Day of the Season

Morgan Lowe recorded 11 kills in the opener and Hannah Lyons added nine kills in each match as the Susquehanna University Volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a split of its first two matches at the Mary Hardin Baylor College Tournament Friday night in Belton, Texas.

The River Hawks (1-1) defeated UMass-Boston in the first match of the day in three sets with a 28-26, 25-13, 25-19 victory, The win was the 13th out of the last 14 regular season matches dating back to last season.

In the evening match against host Mary Hardin Baylor, Susquehanna posted a 25-23 win in the opening set but Mary Hardin Baylor bounced back for three straight wins by scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15 with win the match.

In the opener Lowe led the River Hawks attack with her 11 kills while Lyons added nine and Sydney Portale and Tara Mahoney each had four. Helen Forman handed out 23 assists and Lowe recorded 10 digs.

In the nightcap, Lyons recorded another nine kills and Julie Kreutzer led the team with 16 assists. Lowe had nine digs while Lizzie Herestofa and Lindsey Pugh added seven digs each.

Susquehanna continues play in the tournament in Texas Saturday with matches against Texas-Tyler and Hardin Simmons.
