Hannah Lyons had 15 kills in two matches including a crushing hit to score the winning point in a 15-13 tie-breaker victory over Hardin-Simmons University as the Susquehanna University Volleyball team won a 3-2 decision after dropping a heart-breaking 3-0 match to Texas-Tyler to start the day Saturday in the Mary Hardin Baylor Tournament in Belton, Texas.
In the opener, Susquehanna (2-2) dropped a 3-0 decision but each set was extremely close as the River Hawks fell by scores of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-23 to Texas-Tyler who finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
In the final match of the tournament, Susquehanna won the opening set 26-24 before dropping a pair of close sets by scores of 25-22 and 26-24. The River Hawks held on for a 25-21 win in the fourth set to force the tie breaker but fell behind 8-4 early in the final set.
Lyons and Caroline Beohm helped lead a comeback effort that saw Susquehanna finally take a lead at 13-12 with the help of a Beohm serve. Another good serve gave the River Hawks a 14-12 lead.
After a long serve made it 14-13, Gabby Davis set up Lyons for the final point of the match with a pass to the right and Lyons belted a powerful kill through the block attempt for the win.
Lyons had eight kills and Morgan Lowe let the team with a 15-kill effort. Davis handed out 44 assists and four players finished with double-digit digs as Lindsey Pugh, Kasey Bost, Boehm and Lowe all cleared double digits led by Boehm with 18.
In the Texas-Tyler match, Lowe had 10 kills and Lyons added seven for Susquehanna. Bost and Lizzie Herestofa each had 14 digs while Lowe and Beohm had 10 digs each.
Susquehanna is off until next weekend at the Mary Washington Invitational in Fredricksburg, Virginia.
