Late Surge By Scranton Downs Volleyball

Freshman Sydney Portale recorded 19 kills and senior Morgan Lowe added 13 but it was not enough for the Susquehanna University Volleyball team as the River Hawks fell by a 3-2 score to Scranton Wednesday night in the semifinal round of the Landmark Conference Tournament in Scranton.

Scranton (35-4) advances to play Juniata for the Landmark Championship Saturday.

The Royals won the opening set 25-17 and Susquehanna (21-12) rebounded to win the second set 25-22. Scranton took a 2-1 lead with a thrilling 29-27 win in the third set. The River Hawks had three different 10-point leads in the fourth set before settling for a 25-21 win to force the fifth set. Scranton closed out the victory with a 15-12 win in the final set.

Portale had 19 kills and six blocks while Lowe finished with 13 kills and seven digs. Hannah Lyons had 12 kills and a career-high 11 blocks, Julie Kreutzer handed out 47 assists and also contributed three aces.

Caroline Beohm led the defense with 22 digs while Kreutzer added 14 and Lizzie Herestofa added 13 for the River Hawks.

Susquehanna ends the season with 21 wins reaching the 20-win plateau for the fifth season in a row and eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
