Women's Cross Country Places Second at Landmark Championships; Hess Runs Away with Individual Crown
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Susquehanna University's women's cross
country team placed second out of seven schools at the 2009
Landmark Conference championships at the United States Soliders'
and Airmen's Home on Oct. 31.
Susquehanna scored 48 team points, just seven points behind
Landmark champions The University of Scranton.
SU's sophomore and Landmark Outstanding Performer Casey Hess (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) placed first individually out of 79 runners with a time of 23 minutes, 35 seconds on the 6,000-meter course, nearly a minute better than the runner-up.
Teammate and junior Alycia Woodruff (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) clocked in at 24:34 to finish third, while freshman Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) crossed the line in 25:37 to finish 10th overall. Junior Lauren Smith (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished in 25:58, good for 14th. Senior Cait Pflaum (York, Pa./West York) finished 20th with a time of 26:21.

Woodruff--the 2007 and 2008 conference Outstanding Performer--and Hess have combined to help SU claim the last and only three Landmark individual cross-country championships. Hess was the Landmark Rookie of the Year last year.
